“Today the Department of Finance and Administrative Services (FAS) issued a new Director’s Rule that goes into effect immediately. The Rule requires City of Seattle businesses to comply with health and safety guidelines outlined in the Washington Secretary of Health’s Order 20-03 Face Coverings and the Governor’s Proclamation 20-25.6.

The guidelines, and the Rule, require every person in a business establishment to wear a protective face covering over their nose and mouth. Businesses must also comply with physical distancing, applicable guidelines and other personal protective behaviors required by the Governor’s statewide order. Violation of the statewide order is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and up to a $100 fine. Businesses with repeated and/or egregious offenses may also face additional penalties for violating the Finance and Administrative Services Director’s Rule, including immediate suspension of their business license and criminal charges punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine.

We understand that this is a particularly difficult time for businesses, which is why we’re making every effort possible to focus on outreach and education with our business community. Seattle businesses, like yours, are partners in this work and can help ensure patrons and employees stay safe and healthy. We have produced a flyer in English, Vietnamese, Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Amharic, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), highlighting the Washington Secretary of Health’s Order and the Governor’s Proclamation.
